Microsoft, the makers of the popular Zune portable MP3 player have reportedly filed with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to test the concept of a Zune Phone which will use VOIP over 4G networks that are tipped to replace 3G within the next five years.
The Zune Phone, if true, will be Microsoft’s attempt to compete with Apple’s recently announced iPhone which is due to be released to the public later in 2007. Rumors also state that the Zune VOIP Phone may be release around the same time as the iPhone, possibly earlier.
With the recent rise in the popularity in wireless broadband and the natural progression towards wifi enabled pda’s and phones which allow people to make calls over a VOIP network, this first step in the future of voice over IP will well and truely set-up an arms race between all the major voip, consumer electronics and internet companies for the hearts and minds of current and future voip users.
The question is, when will one of the portable voip enabled phone makers jump into bed with a voip company such as Vonage or even Skype?
